"Brian made our time in Edinburgh absolutely unforgettable. His knowledge of the city’s history and hidden spots is unmatched, and his passion and humor bring every story to life. Beyond the tour, he gave us fantastic recommendations for local pubs and places we never would have discovered on our own. Friendly, welcoming, and a brilliant storyteller. If you’re in Edinburgh, Brian is the guy to see!" An, from the Netherlands, pay,-what-you want tour July 2026

Join me for a stroll through history from one end of Edinburgh Old Town to the other.

But it is not just history… Learn about the city’s link with Marvel superheroes and the role Edinburgh played in the creation of the Harry Potter stories.

Visit the parade ground of Edinburgh Castle and learn how a meeting I had 30 years ago with a tourist from Tennessee changed my life and may change the course of Scottish history.

Hear about the world’s first skyscrapers and learn how people managed without toilets or bathrooms.

Learn about the struggles for the crowns of Scotland and England, how the throne yo-yoed between Catholics and Protestants and why Britain ended up with a German king.

Hear how the kilt became Scotland’s national costume and why it was once banned.

A bit of history, a bit of trivia and a few wee jokes. Born and bred in Edinburgh, I worked as a reporter, feature writer and cinema editor on The Scotsman for 17 years and subsequently wrote regularly for the Guardian and London Times. I have written and edited several books, including The Times on Cinema and On Location - The Film Fan's Guide to Britain and Ireland. More recently I have featured as a tour guide on national television on the This Morning programme.

Meeting point:122 High St, Edinburgh EH1 1SG, UKMeet outside the Tron Kirk Market, 122 High Street, Edinburgh EH1 1QS. It is a former church on the junction of the Royal Mile and South Bridge. I will probably have a distinctive umbrella with Monet's The Poppy Field near Argenteuil on it.Open in Google Maps
