The Alternative Tourism Association, founded by enthusiasts in 2015, began by organizing hundreds of "Free Tours" in Arad and later expanded to Timișoara, serving thousands of tourists, especially during its European Capital of Culture year. Beyond free tours, the association enthusiastically develops themed and "behind closed doors" tours aimed at helping local residents in both cities better understand their heritage. Additionally, it plays a key role in raising the standard of Romanian tourism by training and certifying modern national tour guides.

Located in Western Romania, being the largest city of Banat Region, Timișoara is home to more than 300 thousand people.

The city’s multicultural heritage is owed to the fact that it has been part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and since 1918 Romania.

Timișoara had significant populations of Hungarians, Germans, Jews, Serbians, Bulgarians and Roma at various points in its history.

During the second half of the 19th century and the beginning on the 20th century, the city has experienced rapid development, a lot of the important and imposing buildings in the city being built in that period.
