Konnichiwa! I'm Ryo, your local guide. I graduated from Shinjuku Public High School, a 5-minute walk from Shinjuku station. I went to Waseda University, about a 30-minute walk from the same station. I used to live in Kabukicho town and worked for a movie production company located in the Shinjuku Nichome district. I have first-hand experience going to many of the establishments which we will discuss during the tour. Therefore, I consider myself to be a local. During the day, I am a cram schoolteacher, teaching English to high school graduate students.
My wife and I both thought this tour was a fascinating introduction to the various aspects of Japanese red-light culture. It was way different from what you would normally expect from a Shinjuku nightlife tour. Ryo showed us to many places and explained how they work including the lesbian and gay scenes as well as the host clubs - places we would never go to on our own. And he shared some nice stories, too, plus he gave very interesting personal accounts. We highly recommend this tour which is done with a very small number of participants, four in our case.
We had an amazing experience on our walking tour with Ryo. He was a superb guide—very professional, organized, and exceptionally well prepared. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating insights into everyday life in Tokyo, offering a deeper understanding of the culture and the city beyond the typical tourist perspective. Ryo introduced us to interesting facts and stories that brought the surroundings to life. The 2.5 hours flew by, and we found ourselves completely immersed from start to finish. Ryo was amazing from the beginning of the tour and didn’t hesitate to dive deeper into Shinjuku’s dark history. A lot of personal stories shared by him helped me understand the internals of how Shinjuku’s night life operates. It only happens on Sunday’s generally so make sure you keep it free for this tour!
Ryu was a great guide and the tour was very interesting - bringing to life the darker side and sex industry and history of Shinjuku. He shared the information and insights in very clear and thoughtful way and was very personable. Glad we took this tour!!
