Tour description

This tour includes Cape Coas Castle and Kakum National Park.

Caps coast

  • Cape Coast Castle (Swedish: Carolusborg) is one of about forty "slave castles", or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese "feitoria" or trading post, established in 1555, which they named Cabo Corso. However, in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there. It originally was a center for the trade in timber and gold. It was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold enslaved Africans before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This "gate of no return" was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Coast Castle, along with other forts and castles in Ghana, are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of their testimony to the Atlantic gold and slave trades

  • Kakum National Park, located in the coastal environs of the Central Region of Ghana, Cape Coast to be precise covers an area of 375 square kilometers (145 sq mi). Established in 1931 as a reserve, it was gazetted as a national park only in 1992 after an initial survey of avifauna was conducted. The area is covered with tropical forests. The uniqueness of this park lies in the fact that it was established at the initiative of the local people and not by the State Department of wildlife which is responsible for wildlife preservation in Ghana. It is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway, which is 350 meters (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops that provide access to the forest.

Please note:
The tour involves entrance fees to the Castle and National Park

Verified booking
Travelled in group - Dec 2023
Unfortunately, we sent several messages through the Guru app after Edem confirmed our booking, but he never responded. In good faith we went to the designated meeting point on time and waited a while, but still he didn't turn up. Thankfully, we made it to Kakum National Park on our own and fortuitously met an available bird guide, so all was not lost.🙏🏽
