Hello! My name is Alonso and I am a law student. In my spare time I love to play the guitar, read and walk around the city. I was born and lived all my life in Viña del Mar, but I have moved to Santiago to study at the university. In this way, I have learned to love Santiago as one more inhabitant and to discover its beauties that I now want to share with all of you on my tour.
The capital of Chile can be an exciting place. Behind the crowded streets and the hustle and bustle of big cities, many incredible stories and beautiful places are hidden.
The tour begins in the historic Plaza de Armas, where Pedro de Valdivia chose the location of the first residences in the city, which in 1541 would be called Santiago del Nuevo Extremo.
You will be able to discover the wonderful details of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, maximum representative of the Chilean Catholic Church and in a unique neoclassical style.
After this, we will cross the historic Merced street to be able to walk through the Forestal park and learn about the hidden details of this beautiful park anchored in the heart of the city.
Afterwards, we will tour the picturesque streets of the Lastarria neighborhood, the center of bohemian life in the city. In this way, we will surround the Santa Lucía hill, on whose slopes the mayor of Santiago Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna designed beautiful fountains that can be seen from the street, and we will connect with the Alameda de las Delicias, the main artery of the city that was designed in 1822 by Bernardo O 'Higgins, the first Supreme Director of Chile.
While walking along the Alameda, we will see the Central House of the Catholic University of Chile and, after a few blocks, that of the University of Chile, the first and main house of studies in the State. Founded in 1842 and direct heir to the Royal University of San Felipe, it was a pioneer in the development of the national intelligentsia and the alma mater of 20 presidents of the Republic.
From this side we can also cross through La Moneda, seat of the Government of Chile, the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Relations, and the immense Plaza de la Constitución and its huge tricolor flag.
After this, we will head north a few blocks to visit Paseo Ahumada, the busiest pedestrian street in the city, and we will be able to immerse ourselves in the daily life of Santiago and the old banking or administrative buildings that are located here. Finally, we will arrive back at the Plaza de Armas to end the tour.
This tour, more than just a walk through a capital, is offered as an experience. We will have the opportunity to know in a short period of time the most important and significant places in Santiago and see how its inhabitants move freely through them. We will learn history in an entertaining way and we will sneak into the daily life of the city while we get to know its most impressive and representative places. After the tour, you will leave as knowledgeable experts on Santiago de Chile and fall in love with what this city and its people have to offer.
I will be on the esplanade of the Metropolitan Cathedral with an orange jockey and a brown briefcase.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
