Journey to the Far East: From Hamburg to Batavia explores the entangled history between Hamburg and Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. Through maritime, global trade and colonial networks from the 18th to 20th centuries, we uncover how distant worlds were closely connected.
On this walk, we visit key locations across Hamburg’s city center, including the Hapag-Lloyd AG office, Hanseviertel, Hygieia Fountain, Die Zeit, Asia-Haus, Chilehaus (optional), Reimersbrücke, and the Kaffeemuseum Burg.
Together, these sites reveal traces of Hamburg’s connections to Southeast Asia—hidden in plain sight.
