Free walking tours in Dakar

This was an overall fantastic experience that allowed me and the rest of my group to learn about the history and culture here in Dakar. The meeting location was easy to find (Chamber of Commerce) and Seydi was there to promptly identify himself and greet us. We went to the train station to look at the architecture of the building and then entered the port area (remember to bring physical identification with you to access the port terminal) to purchase the tickets to Goree Island. Seydi wisely chose to get on the first ferry to Goree Island know it would only get more crowded as the day went on. Goree Island was definitely an educational experience learning about the slave trade that occurred in the West Africa region. We also learned about what it is like for the 1800 current residents of Goree Island. There was time to also browse through the local artists’ craftsmanship and things for sale. Once back in Dakar, we had the option of going to the Museum of African Civilization. Since we were exhausted from traveling and were tired, we chose to go right to the African Renaissance Monument. As a prior tour guide at this monument, he was extremely knowledgeable about everything at this site. There was an option to go to the Mosque of the Divinity, but because we were so tired, we opted out of that. In closing Seydi was a great tour guide, was very well educated and spoken. Make sure you bring your identification as well as local currency as there were a lot of times on this tour where you need to spend money to get to and into the sites (ferry to Goree Island, entry into the slave houses, African Civilization museum, taxis to and from Monument and Mosque, etc).
