We had a wonderful tour with Elena in Bucharest. She was an absolutely delightful guide and made the city come alive in a very unique way. Elena originally trained as a puppeteer, and during COVID, she pivoted into guiding full-time. You can really feel that performance background in the way she tells stories. The history is engaging, funny, and very human. At one point she even did a tiny puppet demonstration with a chopstick and a finger puppet to explain how impalement worked in medieval times. It was hilarious and memorable. What we especially appreciated was how she helped us understand the layers of Bucharest. In a single square, you might see a medieval church, a 17th-century inn, a French revival mansion, and a massive Soviet brutalist building all side by side. Elena explained how all of these periods fit together and how the city evolved. She clearly loves Bucharest and Romania, and her optimism about the country’s future is contagious. By the end of the tour, we felt we understood the character of the city much better and appreciated it far more than when we started. We have taken many walking tours in different cities, and Elena’s tour was one of the most entertaining and memorable. Highly recommended.
