Free walking tours in Kandy

We had an amazing experience with Ravi. Ravi knows a ton about the (colonial) history of Sri Lanka and is very passionate about sharing it. The tour was as follows: first a walk through the forest, where he talks about the Kandyan Kings and the foreign colonial powers. He is very open to questions. When there is something natural during the tour which is interesting, he also points it out, although it is certainly not the main part of the tour. We also shortly discussed the turbulent period up till 2009. Afterwards, we went to the chapel of Trinity College, where he went to school. The chapel is discussed architectually and historically, together with the British schooling introduced in Kandy. In short, a tour where the information provided is very dense, with a lot of interaction. We loved it!

I really enjoyed my walking tour with students Yashod and Ishika. They were both very friendly, and they led me on a very well-planned and informative tour of the Botanical Gardens and Getambe Temple. They were very enthusiastic about sharing their culture and everyday life in Sri Lanka, and I was able to ask plenty questions and learned so much about Sri Lanka that I never would have picked up on my own. A really enjoyable and memorable experience!

The information shared by the guru was well organised. A great orator and conversationalist. The tour was very engaging and informative. The walk through the rain forest is quite therapeutic.

We did good visits with Nikhil. He adapted to our choices. We have learned lot of interesting things !

More or less decent experience. The tour took 1.5 hours instead of 3 (as it's indicated in the description). Ravi sent his student Nadith - a nice 18 y.o. guy who has good English, however he is not prepared to being a good guide yet. The official data on history was presented in a bit boring way. The general knowledge on Sri Lanka traditions, economics, social life is enough for a teenager but not very fulfilling for a person interested in expanding the overall knowledge on the country. The walk in the botanical garden is simply dull)) so it's probably goid that it didn't last for 3 hours.

Ravi introduced us to Nadith, a young smart boy who guided us through the temple and gardens. Since it was only my boyfriend and me doing the tour, we had the chance to have a lovely chat with him and learn more about live in Sri Lanka as a local. The earnings from the tour are used to support school projects and help boost the education of students like Nadith. We were very happy about the experience :)

A very nice way to find out about the city’s past . Do think about communicating with your guide however, about ticket prices and adequate shoes/ outfit or such details.

Great tour and guy overall

Nice relaxing walk where we visited a lesser known (for tourists) Buddhist Temple and the Royal Botanical Garden. Ravi was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Buddhism and Sri Lanka. At the Garden, we met up with a local student who gave us a great perspective on how young people in Sri Lanka view things and some of the challenges they have. Excellent tour overall and would highly recommend.

Ravi is a super friendly person, very knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Sri Lanka in the one hour that we spent with him. Unfortunately, on the day of our tour, no student were available to guide us through the Botanical Garden, but Ravi instead took us on a car tour around the University Campus. He also offered to do a different tour with us in the city center, but we instead decided to walk the botanical garden on our own. All in all, we would recommend Ravi to anyone visiting Kandy!

Ravi is well informed and articulated . Most of the tour consisted of a walk in a forest park, which, after the heavy rain of the days before, was a muddy experience. So, wear good walking shoes.Beside the forest walk we spent about fifteen minutes seeing a nice open chapel in one of the numerous schools in Kandy. We have taken a lot of Guru Walks and this one was not what we expected. The name and description of the tour are misleading.

We had an amazing walking tour with Ravi today. A very kind and knowledgable guide that could tell us a lot about the the temple and sri lanka in general. I would definitely recommend if you are in town to attend this tour!

Ravi is a knowledgable and kind guide who is clearly passionate about history and Buddhism and is eager to share this with visitors to Sri Lanka. He was also keen to answer all of our questions, whether they were related to the temple/Buddhism or just general questions about the customs of Sri Lanka. The tour is performed in two parts - the second part is a walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens guided by a final year school student (in our case, Yasintha). Our walk with Yasintha was a mixture of a formal tour and an informal conversation, and we really enjoyed getting a young Sri Lankan’s perspective about his country and culture. Yasintha even accompanied us in a Tuk Tuk to a local food spot which he recommended. The school students are associated with the local Rotary Club, and the tip you give supports this cause. Overall, we couldn’t recommend this tour enough to anybody visiting Kandy.

Ravi was a super enthusiastic and well informed guide! It was a pleasure exploring the hidden place of Trinity College with him - highly recommended!

Ravi provided an unusual opportunity to enter the Trinity College grounds. The chapel is beautiful and the story behind it is moving. The Udawatte Kele forest reserve is fabulous, such huge trees. We saw a pair of wild boar and a troop of toque macaques. Ravi has interesting stories to relate regarding the history of the reserve.

Excellent GuruWalk, unexpected access to the Christian Chapel, followed by a walk through the rain forest for a fabulous view over Kandy, with a run down of Sri Lankan history! We saw monkeys, owls, turtles, fish, a Kingfisher and a Monitor Lizard!
