Essential Free walking tours of Kyoto

Ben was an outstanding tour guide! We went to places without crowds and learnt interesting histories about Arashiyama. Even though it was winter and chilly, Ben’s warm and friendly nature made the morning all the better. Couldn’t recommend this tour more!

We had an incredible tour of Kyoto with Ayumi, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. From wandering through the historic streets of Gion to learning the deeper meaning behind shrines and temples we might have otherwise rushed past, Ayumi brought every stop to life with fascinating stories and cultural insight. She shared so much about local traditions, daily life in Kyoto, and even small details we never would have noticed on our own. Her energy and charisma made the tour feel relaxed, fun, and very personal, and she was always happy to answer questions or tailor the experience to our interests. By the end of the tour, we didn’t just feel like we had seen Kyoto, we genuinely fell in love with the city. I couldn’t recommend Ayumi highly enough.

It was a really great tour with a lot of information and context to all the sites we were visiting. Ayumi was also a great guide - with a wonderful sense of humor and open for all questions.

Absolutely loved the tour with Clare. We started our Kyoto journey with this walk, and thankfully so. Great passion and detailed explanation of history, shrines, local culture and customs. It was raining during our walk, but it didn't deter Clare from missing out, or shortening anything. All the places shown by her became our favorites thanks to her passion. Will definitely reccomend.

Ayumi was a wonderful guide, bringing up curious facts and amusing jokes. Though is was cold and grey, I will always remember this amazing tour in Kyoto.

Good guide, he knows the way to avoid too much people he knows very well the area and the tour was different in some ways, enough information, not too much, that is good because later you only remember or only need a few information

The walking tour of Gion district with our guru Tommy today was better than expected..he was well versed and knowledgeable on the different locations & their history. He was also entertaining and he looked out for everyone. Highly recommended😊👍

Our guide Ayumi was just brilliant - she is well prepared, with many pieces of information, pictures, ready to answer all the questions… the tour was really informative and nice and three hours went by in an instant. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning tour with Ben. He lives in the area, he shared not just information about the area, history, culture…, but we also talked about daily life and many many other things. As it was a low season, we were the only two visitors and Ben did the tour just for us, which we really appreciated. Hi Free Walkers, If you want to do a guru free walking tour in Kyoto, I can warmly recommend you to choose the one guided by Benjamin.  Why you might wonder? Well, because it was good :) But what is good? It is hard to define good since it's very personal how one experiences something as good and many factors in which we have no control can colour these experiences. I can only tell you that the experience I had, this cold and rainy, early December morning was good. And it was mostly because of him as a person and his presentation, trust me. Before the start he contacts you so you know that what you're about to attend is a sure thing. He gives you a warm and friendly welcome with a big smile. Personally, I'm not easily impressed, but he had my attention pretty quick and ongoing and that's a good thing.  He knows the story and the history, he tells it in a good spontaneous way, he is open for debate and parole and drinks his coffee latte & cold. Truly, he is a nice warm guy and does a great job as a guide, it has to be told.

Our trip today with Tomy was extraordinary, very well organized! So much more to understand and appreciate, when guided by a person who knows in depth the history and culture of the place. On top of that, we had great fun. Highly recommended!

On our first day in Kyoto, we had the opportunity to have Kazu as our tour guide, and it was amazing having our first perspective of the city with him. His knowledge and passion for the city made it sensational for us to experience and learn of Kyoto’s history and culture.

We had such a great time on the Lozalized Kyoto walking tour. Our guide (whose name started with A—wish I had written it down!) made the group feel instantly comfortable—she was friendly, funny in a gentle way, and really attentive to everyone’s questions. The route balanced famous spots with hidden corners, and her explanations added so much meaning to what we were seeing. It felt more like strolling with a local friend than being on a tour. Highly recommended.

We had a great time exploring with Caroline, it was just the perfect route, not too long, not too short. Very informative and interesting but not overloading and in no way boring! Caroline is very passionate and was very open to any questions. We also had a lovely group and had a really nice day! Thanks so much Caroline! I’ll be honest, I did think about moving to Japan, but the thought has been long in my mind already! Perhaps next year.
