Tour description
Do you love chocolate?
Guatemalans have grown and consumed cacao (chocolate) for 3,000 years, and the Maya introduced it to Europeans. Come learn about the history of Mayan production of chocolate, sample chocolates, and compare and contrast local chocolatiers while visiting landmarks and learning Antigua's colonial history.
None of the places we will visit charge an entrance fee, but tipping local artisans is appreciated. Wear sunblock, a hat, and comfortable shoes.
Highlights:
- Visits to Mayan artisanal chocolatiers to learn the history of Mayan chocolate production by hand and its sacredness to the Maya where you can sample local artisanal chocolate
- Visits to European-style high-end chocolatiers to sample and contrast
- Royal Palace or Palace of the Captain General (Palacio de los Capitanes)
- Town Hall
- The Santa Catalina Arch
- Church La Merced
- Capuchinas
- The Convent of Santo Domingo
- Tanque la Unión
- The Oldest University in Guatemala, The San Carlos University
