Madrid: Civil War and Francoism - Free tour
Tour description
Cities are a reflection of our society. Its streets, its monuments, its squares, etc. They are part of your personality, your image and your history, which is why understanding the symbols and the reason for their construction, destruction or modification is essential to understand it.
Throughout the more than 1000 years of history of the city of Madrid we have seen a multitude of kings, rulers and soldiers pass by who have shaped , for better or worse, its character and its architecture.
The neighborhoods of Argüelles and Moncloa are the result of the first years of Modern Madrid that followed the liberal and industrial revolutions. Touring part of one of the oldest expansions of Madrid and the surroundings of the University City, a place occupied by the Madrid front during the Civil War, we will see the different symbols that have been built by the different regimes that have passed through Spain since the end of the 19th century to the present, basically differentiating 3 periods:
- Liberalism (late 19th century and early 20th century)
- Second Republic and Civil War (1931-1939)
- Francoism (1939-1975)
We will see and analyze in detail:
- The Parque del Oeste (park design, Civil War bunkers, monuments and statues)
- Plaza de la Moncloa (former Madrid Model Prison, Francoist Architecture in the Air Force Headquarters and Victory Arch)
- University City (Rector's Office, Museum of America, Higher Technical Schools of Engineers and Moncloa Lighthouse)
The tour is illustrated with historical images of the places that we will find, since history is made up of both what is seen and what is no longer seen...
