I'm a 6th generation son born in the Bokaap. Our community are decendants of slaves and political exiles from the far east as a registered guide in Cape town I offer walking tours in the citybowl and bokaap sharing our communities history and culture with the world I'd love to show you around our neighborhood. I have a strong connection to the broader community. I'm a director of the bokaap tourism association and a director of Bokaap helpers garden. which is a NPO in the city focusing on community gardening. Have an intimate knowledge of Robben Island as a lived there for over 10 years too.
The tour was way beyond our expectations. We had a very interesting tour including the community garden, the home of a local rugby legend and homemade donuts. We were made to feel welcome everywhere we went. Highly recommended. Thank you
It was a perfect tour - Muhammad was born in Bo Kaap and he still lives there. So he is a real local and knows the community, a lot of extra informations and he is deeply connected with the people there. We get to know the history of Bo Kaap, but also get in touch with the people who live there and make some great picture of the beautiful houses. He is a funny and warmhearted guy. We had such a great time on the tour with Ilyas! As a true local to the area, he has a personal connection and love for the community that made the tour so much more impactful. Ilyas went above and beyond to introduce us to members of the community (he really knows everyone), share personal stories of his life there, and even took us to see the community garden and inside some of the houses to meet with other lifelong residents. Ilyas is incredibly knowledgeable and professional but the thing that really stood out about the experience was how unique and personal it was. I definitely recommend exploring Bo-kaap with Ilyas.
