Free tour - Medieval Jewish Quarter
The best guides with whom to take a free walking tour that you can find throughout Barcelona, specialists in history and art.
Tour description
We will start the tour by walking through the streets of the Gothic Quarter, in the heart of old Barcelona, where we will get into the corners and alleys that gave life to the Call, the Jewish quarter of the Middle Ages.
We will talk about how they lived, their trades, customs, important personalities and the great cultural legacy that survived to this days. We will listen to some Sephardic music and we will appreciate the beautiful hagadot of Catalonia that are still preserved (a compilation of Pesaj books, the Jewish Passover). We will visit the great synagogue, the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe, and some of the most emblematic places of Jewish life in medieval times.
During the tour we will describe what happened to the Sephardic and Catalan Jews during these centuries; and how they were returning to these lands. The prosperous and happy life of the Sephardic Jews in the Iberian Peninsula ended tragically and abruptly with the expulsion of the Catholic Monarchs in 1942; but over time, and despite the fact that more than five centuries have passed, a new Jewish life makes its way through these same streets and corners of the city.
