Emperor Hadrian in Rome: Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo and more
Tour description
Join my experience in the heart of Rome dedicated to the discovery of the multifaceted personality of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD), a man of high culture, careful administrator of the Empire, valiant soldier and more. He was a very curious man with a great passion for travel, so much so that he wanted to visit in person everything he had read about the various states of the world. Ancient sources defined him as a tyrant, with a personality full of contrasts: "lascivious and moderate, stingy and generous, cruel and forgiving", and "changeable" on every occasion.
On the contrary, according to modern historiography, Hadrian was one of the greatest politicians of all time, a model also for numerous artists of the centuries to come such as Bernini and Borromini, who so loved the innovative and lively architecture that the emperor himself had built in his immense villa, not far from Rome: Villa Adriana in Tivoli, of which I will provide some historical information.
The buildings built by Hadrian in Rome (and elsewhere) reflect the spirit, politics, hatred and loves, refined architectural tastes, but above all they express (in my opinion) the profound "eclectic" culture of the emperor (basically the Roman culture is distinguished by its "eclecticism").
Through a photographic and iconographic repertoire I personally created, I will tell you the story and the salient aspects of Adriano's politics and personality, having before our eyes the monumental buildings he built and the remains found up to now.
We will start from the Trajan's Column and Hadrian's "Auditoria" near Piazza Venezia. We will continue in the central district of Campo Marzio, dominated by the most important monuments of the city, such as the imposing ones built and rebuilt by Hadrian himself, including the Pantheon, the Hadrianeum or Tempio del Divo Adriano in Piazza di Pietra and more.
I will also lead you through the small alleys of Rome where, between one restaurant and another, I will show you the remains of ancient buildings, perhaps less known to tourists, built by Adriano himself dedicated to some members of his family.
Finally, the tour will culminate beyond the Tiber, where the gigantic Mausoleum that Hadrian had built for himself and his successors, known to all as Castel Sant'Angelo, holds the true enigma of Hadrian's power and personality ... .that is?
