Hi everyone! I'm Ilya, an artist, musician, enthusiast, and entrepreneur from Moscow, Russia. I have been living only in Essaouira for more than three years in a local community.
I truly love this town. I used to give free walks here, and even though I’m not here in person right now, you can still explore Essaouira through my perspective and experience.
I created this self-guided local walking experience, where I share my personal routes, stories, food logic, and practical tips so you can explore the city independently, at your own rhythm.

Welcome to my self-guided walking tour of Essaouira.

First Stop - Bab El Marsa.
You are standing at Bab El Marsa, the ocean gate of Essaouira.
For centuries, the Atlantic waters here have been rich in fish - so rich that even today Japan and other countries still lease fishing zones along this coast. These waters sustained the city from Berber tribes to pirates, slave traders, and one of the largest Jewish communities in Morocco.
Local tip: Don’t buy tickets to access the city walls - you can get the same view for free at the next stop.

Grilled fish and Oyster in the Port.
After the port, walk toward the grills where locals prepare fish over charcoal. You choose the fish, pay a small grilling fee (20 MAD), and eat it fresh with bread and salad - simple and honest. Or ask for mixed grill and they will surprise you for 60-100 MAD :)
Local tip: Try the oysters in kiosks. Fishermen open them fresh and serve them with lemon for 10 MAD. Very fresh and incredibly good.

After the fish market and grill, keep walking forward.
On the right side, look carefully for a small, easy-to-miss staircase. It leads up onto the fortress wall - for free. From here, you’ll get a stunning view of the port and the nearby islands. Walk almost to the end of the wall for the best perspective, especially when the port is busy.Further ahead lies an island with massive walls. When Mogador was a major slave export port, enslaved people were held here for weeks in quarantine to prevent epidemics!
How much does this tour cost?
Free tours don't have a fixed price. At the end, each person contributes to the guide the amount they consider fair based on their satisfaction. As a guideline, Guruwalk recommends between €15 and $50 per participant.
