History and symbols of St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican area
Tour description
Join my guided tour dedicated to discovering the treasures of St. Peter's basilica and the Vatican area, the smallest state in the world. We will admire masterpieces of extraordinary beauty and uniqueness such as Michelangelo's Pietà , the canopy of San Pietro by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the papal monumental tombs and more.
I will tell you the story of St. Peter's Basilica from the Roman age to the Baroque period, as well as that of Bernini's double colonnade and the Vatican obelisk placed in the center of the square. I will reveal to you the symbolic and Christological aspects of the works of art, of the architectural layout of St. Peter's Basilica. Obviously there will be legends and curiosities! During the tour I will make use of a photographic and iconographic repertoire that I personally elaborated on the gradual architectural and urban changes of the Vatican Hill and of the basilica from the ancient to the modern age.
Meeting point: we will meet at the foot of the Vatican Obelisk.
The entrance ticket to the basilica is free but you will need to queue to enter and go through the security checks.
