Free tour of World War II
Tour description
How did Krakow experience World War II? How did the Nazi occupation develop and how did it affect the city's inhabitants? Are you tired of most World War II tours focusing on the Holocaust?
All these questions and many more will be addressed on a tour that delves into the life of the city during World War II.
Krakow, like most Polish cities, suffered dramatically during the conflict. However, for a number of historical reasons, the city's structure was given some protection, as it was a stronghold and seat of the Nazi general government. But although Krakow's physical structure was not as damaged during the war as other cities, especially Warsaw, the same cannot be said of its culture and people.
We will delve into the context prior to the war to unravel the reasons that led Poland to enter it and the importance that resistance had in the war context.
We will visit the main buildings that formed part of the structure of the Nazi occupation and we will offer all the historical information necessary to provide a complete and global view of an event that marked the history of the city and changed the world order.
On the tour we will see:
- The market square in times of occupation
- Nazified streets of the historic center
- Buildings managed by the GESTAPO and the NKVD
- Memorial to the Katyn massacres
- Polish resistance memorial Armia Krajowa
- Building of the Ordnungpolizei
- Collegium Novum
- Krakow City Hall during the Nazi occupation
- Hans Frank's headquarters
- Lots of photographic material to compare before and now
If you want to understand how Polish society broke down and how a totalitarian regime like the Nazis was established, don't hesitate, this is your tour.
