From Rue des Ayres—once a Roman road linking the Garonne port to the city—to Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux’s longest pedestrian street, these historic arteries tell the story of trade, legends, and daily life. Rue des Ayres followed the old city walls, while Sainte-Catherine buzzed with medieval merchants, witches’ tales, and later became the heart of Bordeaux’s shopping district.
