Explora Salamanca is the union of young guides and entrepreneurs who have decided to join forces to offer tourists visiting Salamanca free quality tours. We have two different free tours: our free tour of the historical-artistic complex of Salamanca, visiting its main monuments; and another themed free tour of Salamanca Encantada, with performances throughout the visit.
With this Free Tour through the old town of Plasencia , the Pearl of Jerte , you will discover the customs, culture and history of this city of Extremadura.
Plasencia was founded as a city by King Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1186, however, before its foundation there were already settlements as evidence indicates that this territory has been used by numerous peoples, such as Celts, Vetones or Vacceos. The main reason is its geographical location at the exit of a valley, between mountain passes and close to the Jerte river ford.
Plasencia was a key town during the Reconquest, famous people such as Fernando el Católico, Inés Suárez or Juana la Beltraneja have passed through it, it should be noted that it was the town that the doctors of the court recommended to Fernando el Católico for being the healthiest place of all his kingdoms and for this reason, in 1515 this monarch moved to live here.
Plasencia is also the city of the Beltraneja , in this walled town it was where the daughter of Enrique IV, Juana, nicknamed the Beltraneja , was proclaimed as legitimate heiress. This fact triggered a war conflict for the succession of the Crown of Castile between the supporters of Juana de Trastámara and those of Isabel la Católica. Another example of the historical importance of our city is its great role in the Route of Isabel la Católica in Extremadura.
The tour begins in the Plaza Mayor , located in the center of the old area and where the Town Hall is located. In the main tower of this building there is a watchmaker, an icon of our municipality. Do you know the story of Grandpa Mayorga?
In addition to visiting the cathedral complex and its two cathedrals , which stand out as the temples with the largest and richest ornamentation in Extremadura, we will also show you the Church of San Martín , the oldest parish in our city, the Puerta de Berrozanas , a door that gives access to a noble neighborhood very close to the Plaza Mayor, it houses monuments such as the House of Grijalva-Almaraz, the House of Toledo Cadena or the Convent of Las Capuchinas.
Along the route we will discover the most important palaces, stately homes and historic civil and religious buildings in our city.
