Hello i am Cesar. Pleased to meet you! I am an official guide of the Galapagos Islands National Park and I am specialized in nature tourism. For 40 years I have dedicated myself to making the different charms of the Galapagos and continental Ecuador known to people from all over the world. Until recently, this reserve of giant tortoises, native forest and lava tunnels was only open to specialized groups of botanists, biologists and geologists, but a few months ago we opened it up to tourism and we are looking forward to your discovery.

Tour description

Important: The tour does not include admission to the reserve which costs $5.

Would you like to see the giant Galapagos tortoises in their natural habitat?

Do you want to know more about them and find out what role they play in the ecosystem?

If your answer is yes and you like adventures, this free walking tour is for you. We invite you to come and discover the reserve.
We will meet directly at the Galapagos Frontier reserve where you will be greeted by a naturalist guide with more than 30 years of experience who will take you to discover the Galapagos endemic forest , the area with the highest plant endemism of all the islands.

On the way we will pass through the forest of the transition zone, where we will be able to observe giant tortoises along the way. We will be able to see different species of endemic birds , such as the canary or Darwin's finch, among many others.
Later we will have the opportunity to see two lava tunnels , with recent formations of stalactites and stalagmites, where we will know the formation of the Galapagos Islands and, with a little luck, we will be able to see the barn owl that lives in this cave. We will finish the tour with a delicious juice from the fruit trees of the reserve.

Directions to reach the reserve:

🚌 1. By bus to Los Guayabillos and then by taxi to the Galapagos border.

🚕 2. By taxi from Puerto Ayora.

🚲 3. Cycling from Puerto Ayora through the cycle path, passing the craft park and the cycle path. You can contact us to get bikes at the best rental price.

This was our favorite land tour we did in the Galapagos! If you are expecting to go on a well maintained/paved tour route this is not the tour to go on, but if you want a more rustic and natural experience we highly recommend this tour! We left the facilities walking a narrow, one person trail that leads through the grassy areas/mandarin trees where we saw many tortoises that ranged from small to very large. These tortoises are not in enclosures and are roaming free between the Galapagos Frontier and National Park. We continued on towards the lava tunnels walking through many areas with native vegetation that Caesar stopped to tell us about medicinal uses, etc. Parts of the trail did get muddy, though mud boots were provided. At the end of the trail are the lava tunnels where we saw underground lava flows, fissures, etc. Then we made our way back to the facilities and enjoyed fresh juice which was a great bonus! Book this tour - you won’t regret it!!

Great tour, amazing to watch the turtles in their natural habitat and learn something about their life, walking through the lava tunnels was also impressive and Ceasar the guide gave interesting information. After the tour we had lunch at the Reserva with tangerine juice from their own trees, really delicious!! Thank you so much for the great experience😊😊
