Medieval Amsterdam with an archaeologist
Tour description
Welcome to the medieval heart of Amsterdam walking tour!
Your journey begins at the iconic Basiliek van de Heilige Nicolaas, the patron saint of the city and a celebrated figure today. Here, next to what used to be the port, you will learn about the creation of the town.
From there, we will go through a street called Zeedijk or what used to be the location of the first dike blocking the sea. It is located right next to Amsterdam's famous Red Light District and there is an important relation between both.
As we stroll through the narrow, winding streets, you'll experience the influence of medieval architecture in the oldest houses. Our next stop is Nieuwmarkt, where de Waag, a 15th-century gatehouse, stands majestically.
We'll explore the spaces where old monasteries used to be, to see the churches that are still standing between public buildings and houses from later centuries.
Our journey concludes at the Begijnhof, a hidden courtyard dating from the Middle Ages. This serene spot is home to the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam and the beautiful English Reformed Church. Feel the echoes of the past as you learn about the beguines, devout women who lived here.
This tour not only unveils the beauty of medieval Amsterdam but also immerses you in the stories and culture that have shaped this vibrant city. Join us for a walk through history, where every corner has a tale to tell!
