Story:
- In 2008, while construction began on a new cultural complex near the former Eastern Garage and Public Market in central Antalya, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery, the Eastern Necropolis of ancient Attaleia. Rescue excavations led by the Antalya Museum uncovered 865 graves, over 1,000 registered artifacts, tens of thousands of smaller objects, and nearly 2,000 human skeletons, revealing how ancient residents of the city lived, died, and honored their dead.
- Dating from the late 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, the site includes various types of burials: simple rock-cut graves, dromos and chamber tombs, sarcophagi, and cremation urns. These finds show that the area served as a cemetery long before the city of Attaleia was officially founded by King Attalos II of Pergamon in the 2nd century BC.
- To preserve this unique archaeological heritage, the area was declared a First-Degree Archaeological Site in 2011.
- You’ll learn how ancient Anatolians prepared for the afterlife, why they built elaborate graves, and how art and faith intertwined in the journey beyond death.
- As a licensed professional guide, I’ll help you connect mythology, archaeology, and psychology to understand what these artifacts really meant.
- Accessibility: indoors, air-conditioned, easy walking
- This is not a sad visit, it’s a fascinating story of life, remembrance, and human creativity.
