My name is Giovanni, I'm 27 and I live in Rapallo (GE). I attended the University of Genoa in the department of foreign languages. I've been working for a year as receptionist in a hotel in Rapallo but my dream is to become a tour guide in Genoa because I fell in love with this city during the years of the University. I have a big passion for history, music, food, drink and relationships between people; my aim is to show to the people the beautiful things which I discovered and experienced there

About the tour

Maybe Genoa is not one of the most famous italian cities, but you are going to be surprised discovering how beautiful she is, walking around her streets, her promenades, her narrow ways. You will find a city with a glorious history: a history of sea, ships, battles, riches, bravery, devotion but also greed, jealousy and pride.

With this route I would like to make you experience the same feelings I proved when I discovered Genoa during the years of the university.

Route - (approx. 2,5h/ 3h

- Via Balbi and her palaces

- Porta dei Vacca and Via del Campo

- San Lorenzo Cathedral

- Old Pier with San Giorgio's Palace

- Santa Maria di Castello and Porta Soprana

- Matteoti Square

- Palace of the Doges

- de Ferrari Square

- Garibaldi Street

Along the tour, if you are interested in, we will eat and drink in the places where the locals usually have lunch or dinner and we will try the local specialities. I like to keep it informal, so if you want, after the tour we can go to have a drink together in some typical bars of the city.

So what are you waiting for? Come with me for a pleasant walk through Genoa.

The tour was informative and enjoyable. Giovanni battled through the rain and enthusiastically toured us through the city. He was able to show us little nooks and areas we missed on our solo run through the city previous day. We highly recommend him.

Giovanni is a friendly guy, he took us to his local cafe, where we ate cheap authentic Freshly cooked pasta, unfortunately we didn’t find the tour interesting, fun and informative.

Response from Giovanni:

Thanks for your feedback, but I think it could be more useful for me and for the tour if you explained what can be improved and what went wrong. Kind regards Giovanni

Giovanni was nice but the tour contained almost no history, more like a friend walking you around town than an actual tour guide. In my mind it was a waste of time. I think Giovanni should take some other tour guides in other city to feel how the atmosphere should be.

Another thing he needs to think about it the volume in his voice, and where people are. He was most of the time walking and talking at the same time, the streets of Genova are very small so it would almost always be only one person next to him that could hear what he said. It was like he was talking right into the air just to himself.

The guide also didn’t seem very prepared. Even though he says he studied English at the university and works as a translator he spent a lot of time looking for words and phrases. I believe this was more due to lack of planning than an actual language problem.

So things Giovanni needs to think about;

Don’t walk and talk at the same time, walk and gather the group up at a good location where everyone can hear AND see you.

Talk louder and clearer.

Incorporate more actual historical facts and statistics, people who just wanna walk around can do that perfectly fine by themselves these days due to google maps.

Practice what you are going to say on the tour BEFOFE the actual tour.

Response from Giovanni:

Hi Veronica, thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that you think that the tour was a waste of time but there are some things I want to make clear: 1 I agree with you when you say that I should speak louder and clearer because unfortunately my voice is not so loud, but you could tell me to speak louder when you didn't hear me. 2 I don't work as a translator but as a receptionist here in Rapallo ( this was clearly written on my description). 3 I can clearly understand that a "real" tour is made in another way, but if you chose to come on a free walking tour you should be aware that it's often led by people who are not professional guides. Maybe next time, hiring a professional guide could be a better solution for you. 4 if you read the description about myself and about the tour you will see that my informal and not "didactic" approach is clearly declared. 5 a tour is successful not merely when the guide is competent but also when the "audience" is sympathetic with him. Kind regards Giovanni

This was an absolutely amazing tour!! Giovanni is fantastic! So knowledgeable, caring, funny and warm. We had the most brilliant day with Giovanni and his girlfriend Julia who was visiting. It was more like spending the day with friends. Places were recommended for food, drink, and and culture. Giovanni is rightly proud of this wonderful city and demonstrates amazing knowledge of everywhere he takes you. Would do it all again anytime!! Emma.

We had a great day with Giovanni. He was eager to please the group and he is very familiar with the history of Genova. He showed us some hidden gems in the city and made us more familiar both with the town and it's history. We highly recommend this tour!
