Discover the Medina of Sousse like a native
Tour description
There's no better way to soak up the charm of the old, oriental-style city and discover its most hidden attractions than by leisurely strolling through its winding streets. Beyond its ancient and famous monuments, such as the Great Mosque or the Ribat, the city boasts several hidden corners and buildings unknown even to locals, whose originality can be surprising. We'll begin with the Ribat, a fortress dating back to the 9th century AD, a few years before the Great Mosque was built, which also began as a fortress before being converted into a mosque in the middle of the same century. Both monuments are distinguished by a new architectural style introduced by the Arabs to Tunisia and North Africa. (Tickets not included). After the visit, we'll begin our walk through the historic center, following the north wall and passing other minor religious buildings. You can also visit some of the old houses in the medina. We'll reach the highest point of the city, which is still occupied by the Kasbah (Alcazaba), the Palace of Forlalza and formerly the seat and official residence of the governors of Sousse for centuries. The fortress currently houses the country's second-largest archaeological museum, with a rich collection of Roman mosaics, a visit essential for exploring the diverse cultures the city has known throughout its history. We'll continue our walk along the southern wall, ending with the souks (old markets), which still retain their original layout, occupying several streets and alleys with various stalls selling handicrafts, spices, vegetables, fabrics, and clothing. This vibrant area of the medina offers a vibrant social atmosphere. Before concluding our walk and leaving the medina, we'll enjoy a mint tea or Tunisian coffee in one of the souk's old cafés. We're always available to provide further information and details.
