Free Tour of the historic center of León (with guides from León)
Tour description
Our City Tour begins in the Plaza de la Catedral , where we will begin by talking about the origins of the city of León, to then focus on the 13th century Gothic temple. When did the works start? How much time they lasted? Who was the person in charge of starting the construction? What influences does the cathedral of León have from other French ones? What types of stained glass are there?
We will continue our route to the Romantic Quarter , also known as the Barrio del Cid. A typical area for tapas with countless bars and a great nightlife.
We will continue to the Royal Basilica of San Isidoro where we will enjoy the 2 Romanesque tympanums from the 11th century in the well-known Puerta del Perdón and Puerta del Cordero. Do you know the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, and the chalice of Doña Urraca?
Then, our visit goes to Casa Botines , a famous modernist building by the architect Antonio Gaudí , one of his three works carried out outside his homeland. Next to Botines, an imposing Renaissance building, the Palacio de los Guzmanes .
We will also cross the Plaza de los Condes de Luna , a very powerful family in León and in whose old palace the Kingdom of León Interpretation Center is now located.
Finally, we will enter the Barrio Húmedo , where its narrow streets full of bars and typical tapas will whet our appetite. Among the most famous tapas we highlight: Potatoes, cecina, blood sausage, garlic soups, picadillo, croquettes, sausage, etc. Being a free gift from Leonese restaurateurs with each drink. Nor can we forget its DO wines such as Bierzo or Tierras de León. The visit crosses streets with names of old guilds such as Azabachería or Carnicerías to enter the heart of the Barrio Húmedo and end in a traditional and picturesque square, Plaza del Grano.
