Hello everyone! My name is Alberta, I am an official guide and archaeologist. I like being a guide because I can combine two of my great passions: languages and archaeology. I love travelling and getting to know cultures and people from different parts of the world. I have lived in Ravenna, Spain and France and now I am interested in showing you the beauty of Sicily and my hometown, Catania. I believe that the best way to get to know and experience a city is to rely on the local people, to get to know not only the historical events of a place, but also the aspects of daily life, customs and traditions.
During my guided tour we will discover together the characteristics of archaeological and baroque Catania, visiting places where it will be possible to perceive the historical continuity of this city that was destroyed and then rebuilt several times: we will learn about its special relationship with the nearby volcano Etna and discover the signs of the lava flow that surrounded it in the 17th century. All this will be accompanied by curiosities, legends and traditions (especially gastronomic!).
The tour will start from Piazza Duomo, with its cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha, the city hall and the characteristic Fountain of the Elephant, the so-called Liotru.
Passing by the fountain of the Amenano River, we will enter the folkloristic historical market, also known as the Pescheria, where you will be enchanted by the variety of local products, including fresh fish, typical delicacies and colourful fruit and vegetables.
If you wish, there will be an opportunity to visit a lava cave hidden underneath a bar (this activity requires an entrance fee of 1€).
We will then move on to the Ursino Castle, built by Frederick II of Swabia in the Middle Ages.
Our next stop will be Piazza San Francesco, where our discussion will touch on several topics: some curiosities about the 19th-century composer Vincenzo Bellini and something about the Greek Katane, before taking an outside look at the Roman theatre and odeon.
During the second part of the visit I will take you through the rich and elegant via Crociferi, a Unesco site of late Baroque Catania and home to churches and monasteries.
We will end our guided tour in Piazza Università, where a peculiar lamppost will illustrate one of the best-known local legends.
I look forward to discovering this magnificent city together!
Important information for travellers
1. If you don't find available seats to book on the app, you can contact me so you can join the tour without any problems.
2. Although this is a free walking tour, consider that you will be guided by a tour guide authorised by the Sicilian Region, so I suggest a participation fee of not less than 10€.
3. If the minimum number of 5 participants is not reached, the tour will be cancelled.
You will find me at the elephant fountain with a red purse and a white bag
