Walking Tour to Columbus Cemetery. History and Art Combined
Tour description
I'm a history lover who has become a professional freelance tour guide, I have had access to privileged info extracted from the national archives and cemetery archives as well, and now I want to share all that I have discovered from my walks, readings and tours with you. I can assure you that you'll be blown away by this place. Which, by the way, is the busiest cemetery in the city.
I would like to teach you important details of our identity such as political history, romantic histories, funerary symbolism, architecture and even tell you about miracles & legends through the most interesting sculptures & monuments of this unique open-cast museum in the world.
At first, we will visit a nearby coffee shop, where I will introduce you to the history of the cemetery from its foundation to the present day. Then we'll visit the place, and you'll be amazed at its uniqueness. It's the biggest and most important cemetery in Cuba. The number of legends, histories, and amazing facts that we can find there is so vast that it's a mandatory visit when you come to Havana. The starting point will be the main entrance and moving along the main avenue we will visit the most important tombs and pantheons.
We will see 21 meters high monuments, mausoleums, a reproduction of the piety by Michelangelo, the Tomb of the Domino, tombs celebrating faithful pets, granting wishes statues, pyramids, medieval castles, and much more.
An entrance fee of 100 cup is required per visitor at the cemetery. We're suffering a massive inflationary process at the moment, so I would recommend carrying more just in case.
If you're into photography, don't forget to bring your camera so you can take amazing and unique photos. It's also very important to use sunscreen or to carry an umbrella and all sorts of sun protection. Bring some water, sunglasses and comfortable shoes. It's Cuba, after all.
