Free Favela Tour: Santa Marta + Michael Jackson
Tour description
Shall we explore one of the most famous favelas from the inside? Shall we visit the Michael Jackson statue? Of course, I'm talking about the Santa Marta Favela!
The tour begins with a brief introduction in the square at the base of the favela.
To reach the top, we will use the funicular from Station 1. We will go up to the last stop and begin our descent through the maze of stairs and corridors.
We will spot the soccer field that served as a helipad for Michael Jackson's arrival.
We will pass by the Santa Marta Chapel, which gives the community its name.
Down the stairs, we will reach the tour's highlight stop: the terrace where the King of Pop's statue is located and where he filmed part of his music video "They Don't Care About Us".
We will have time to admire the city view with a cold beer or a classic caipirinha!
We will visit some local shops and have the opportunity to delve into the Atitude Social NGO, a social and educational project.
We will find vibrant murals that reflect the rich local culture.
Upon reaching the Samba School, we can attend a drum rehearsal.
Finally, we will return to our starting point, concluding the tour.
The Santa Marta Favela tour is an opportunity to see beyond stereotypes and understand the resilience and creativity of its inhabitants, as well as enjoy a unique view of Rio de Janeiro.
