Free tour in Oymyakon, the coldest city in the world
Tour description
Oymyakon is a remote village located in the Sakha-Yakutia region of eastern Siberia, Russia. It is known as the coldest inhabited place in the world , with winter temperatures that can drop below -50 °C (-59 °F) , and an all-time high of -67.7 °C (-64 °F) recorded in 1933.
With a population of just a few hundred people, Oymyakon is located in a valley surrounded by mountains that trap the cold, making the climate extremely harsh for much of the year. The village's name means "unfrozen water" in Yakut, referring to a nearby hot spring that prevents the local river from freezing completely.
Life in Oymyakon is harsh: cars must be kept running all day to prevent them from freezing, and schools only close if the temperature drops below -55°C. Despite this, the community is self-sufficient and proud of its ability to withstand such extreme conditions.
