Coimbra snapshot with a certified guide in less than 2H
Tour description
Hi! I'm José — a certified Portuguese guide, university graduate, and Coimbra local for over 20 years.
This free tour is perfect if you want to explore the historic downtown without climbing the steep hills to the University — ideal if you're short on time or visiting during the afternoon heat.
🏛️ What we'll see:
- Manga Garden
- Santa Cruz Church (outside only during services)
- St. James Church
- Barbican Arch
- Almedina Tower & Gate
- Portagem Square
We’ll walk through the heart of medieval Coimbra, learn how the Church of St. James has transformed over time, and uncover the story of the city’s patron saint and her connection to the Monastery of Saint Clare.
You'll also hear the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês — Portugal’s own Romeo and Juliet — that really happened and left its mark on Portuguese culture.
Although we stay downtown, I’ll show photos and diagrams to help you understand Coimbra’s famous academic traditions and give context to explore the university area later on your own.
To make everything easier to follow, I use visual aids like maps, old photos, and diagrams. After all, it’s much easier to imagine the past when you can see it.
At the end of the tour, you'll receive a handy info sheet with local tips to make the most of your time in Coimbra.
