Gonçalo Lopes Walking Tours places several local guides at your disposal throughout the year, that being our only project. Committing to our task of guiding and making our heritage known, we strive to explore new places, to try new restaurants and to learn everything that may ensure the quality of our tours. We love to meet people from all over the world: either travelers or tourists bound for Coimbra, and we love to discuss our history, culture, food, traditions, architecture and lifestyle, among many other subjects. And through this passion of ours, we became tour guides! Most of us were born and raised here in Coimbra. We possess both academic degrees and linguistic know-how!

About the tour

Discover the most emblematic places of the most famous university city in Portugal with this guided tour. Coimbra will captivate you at first sight! We will meet at 10:00 or 15:00 in Praça Dom Dinis in front of the statue of King Dom Dinis and start the guided tour of Coimbra, the former capital of Portugal. We will continue to the new cathedral, important in academic traditions, passing the science museum, some republics, passing the old bishop's house and going up to the University of Coimbra. The University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded in 1290! Inside we will see its beautiful patios, from where we will have privileged views of the city. We will go to the Old Cathedral, on whose façade we will see that it is one of the best preserved Romanesque buildings in the country. You will love it! We will know the history of fado, the traditional music of Coimbra. And is that this type of song is closely linked to university life in the beautiful Portuguese town. We'll find out why! We will cross the Arch of Almedina and, driving to the toll plaza, we pass a late medieval house, the former Royal Hospital, which today is a Chinese store. Then we will go to the Church of Santa Cruz. Did you know that the first two kings of Portugal rest in this temple? We will finish our tour, next to Jardin da Manga. Remember the places where we make stops for the guide to make some explanations: Dom Dinis Square, New Cathedral, Science Museum, Machado de Castro National Museum, Old Cathedral, Arco Almedina, Largo da Portagem and Church of Santa Cruz
