Free Tour Ciénaga Magdalena, the Macondian green bonanza.
Tour description
Ciénaga Magdalena, the inspiration for "Macondo", is one of the few cities in the world that does not have a founding date. When European civilizations arrived almost 500 years ago, it was a large village with more than 5000 huts. Today it sits on a vast beach that is 4 kilometers wide. From that refreshing beach, you can observe the imposing city of Santa Marta, and at the same time, you can enjoy beautiful sunrises and captivating sunsets whenever you wish.
The banana boom at the beginning of the last century enriched its inhabitants, who decided to build buildings of great aesthetic and cultural value in the best European style, which are examples of the architecture of the republican period (neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclecticism, modernism, etc.).
The intact preservation of these buildings over time led to its historic center being declared a national heritage site and the city becoming part of the heritage towns network, and it is currently certified as a sustainable tourist destination in Colombia.
Masonic symbols will accompany us throughout the entire tour, you will see them on the Malecón Miramar, the historic center, and in the cemetery, and together we will unveil them.
This historic city has a cemetery humorously called "The Cemetery of the Rich", you will learn why it is still called that, and while in that sacred place, you will visit the tomb of "Remedios the Beauty", a mythical character from One Hundred Years of Solitude, and the tomb of Guillermo de Jesús Buitrago, the Cienaguero composer, who comes back to life every December when you hear his songs: "New Year's Eve", "Vinola's Rum", "Vagabond Shout", "Compadre Heliodoro" among other famous compositions.
"The Devil" existed and lived for many years in this town. On this Free Tour, I will take you to the "House of the Devil" where I will tell you the myth that still terrifies locals and visitors.
Ending our Free Tour at the Plaza de los Mártires, next to the "Prometheus of Freedom", I will tell you about the banana massacre.
Ahh, and what better way to do this tour than by bicitaxi or motocarro, you will love it, although walking is the best option.
Important information for the traveler:
If you live in Santa Marta or are visiting that city, we will go to Ciénaga by taxi or intercity bus. If you are in Ciénaga, wait for me at the Parque Plaza del Centenario, I will be at El Templete."
