Sightseeing tour of Lisbon
It's almost 20 years since I fell in love with Lisbon during my semester abroad - and call Portugal my new home. As a city guide, study tour guide and travel book author, I know literally every corner of the city and the country, can tell many a joke from Portuguese history or current topics - and thanks to my Portuguese family, I can also tell you a lot about the mentality.
Tour description
We start our city tour at the Lisbon market hall , an exciting mixture of traditional market stalls and hip event gastronomy. From here it goes through one of the most original districts of Lisbon up to one of the most beautiful "Miradouros" - with a magnificent view over the river and the photogenic Bridge of April 25th . We learn how it got this name and why the Cristo Rei spreads his arms over Lisbon.
Passing the Bairro Alto nightlife district, we immerse ourselves in the age of voyages of discovery before we get to know venerable shops and a special café in the bohemian Chiado district . At the promising Santa Justa elevator, the lower town of Baixa lies at our feet and we learn how it got its current appearance as a result of the terrible earthquake in 1755 and how old the Castelo de São Jorge on the castle hill opposite actually is. We then stroll down to the picturesque Praça do Comércio where our tour ends on the banks of the Tagus .
