For years, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding friends and Couchsurfers through the old town of Ohrid, uncovering its hidden gems and sharing its rich history. Now, thanks to a recommendation, I’m excited to bring this experience to GuruWalk! My small-group tours focus on exploring the old town's narrow streets, local food spots, and secret delights, ensuring a social and personalized experience that’s impossible with larger tours. And don’t worry - my terrible jokes come free with every booking! Update: After lots of nudges from fellow travelers, I’ve also started a food-focused free tour in Skopje. Bold enough to lead you into hidden spots no tourist would find alone, it’s a delicious way to experience the city like a true local!

Tour description

Skopje has a rhythm most visitors miss, hidden in the everyday places where locals gather. I’ll take you to spots no tourist ever plans to see - unless by accident, yet still very central.

This walking food tour includes tastings at three iconic places that have outlived me (and I’m not that young anymore). We’ll meet at the main church, where I’ll share a bit of history before our culinary adventure.

We’ll start with a stroll through a lively farmer’s market, where stalls overflow with fresh produce and the air buzzes with local chatter. Hidden inside is a small bakery where we’ll try what many call the best burek in town. From there, we’ll head into the bohemian quarter, known for its kafanas and laid-back atmosphere that locals love. We’ll stop for traditional kebapchinya grilled over coal, smoky and unforgettable. To finish, we’ll visit the city’s oldest shop for boza and sweets, where recipes have been passed down for generations.

This isn’t a checklist of landmarks, but a taste of Skopje’s daily life, the side that makes you feel like the city let you in on a secret. Come as a tourist, leave as a friend!

P.S. Bring an appetite, you’ll need it!

The treats are on me and usually cost around 5-6 euros per person, just to give you an idea if you’d like to add a little extra to your tip. Of course, it’s completely optional - only if you truly enjoyed the tour!

Highlights

What will we see on this tour?

Meeting point:
Blvd. Partizanski Odredi 17, Skopje 1000, North Macedonia
We’ll meet at the fountain in front of Skopje's main church, the Archbishop Cathedral „St. Clement of Ohrid”. If you can’t find it, just ask for ‘Soborna’ - everyone knows it. I’ll arrive 5 minutes before the tour begins and wait another 5 for everyone to gather. You’ll recognize me by my Skopje-themed hoodie and a big smile.
1
Outside visit
Sveti Kliment Ohridski
Skopje’s main church, crowned with giant domes, is hard to miss. Step inside and you’ll swap city noise for candlelight, icons, and a quiet moment of magic.
2
Outside visit
Farmers' Market Bunjakovec
A lively farmer’s market buzzing with chatter and overflowing with fresh produce. Somewhere between the colors and the chaos hides a local secret - the best simit in town, waiting to be discovered.
3
Outside visit
Memorial Bench of Goran Stefanovski
In the heart of the bohemian quarter, a quiet bench honors Macedonia’s greatest playwright. Surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and street life, it’s a perfect spot where art meets everyday chatter.
