Tour description
At the appointed time, we'll meet in Plaza de la Aduana, the perfect place to begin exploring Cartagena's traditions and culture. Ready to discover the importance of coffee and tobacco? Let's begin the free tour!
In this central spot in Cartagena de Indias, the largest square in the historic center and the former administrative hub of the colonial port, we'll tell you how the entry and exit of goods arriving from all over the Americas was processed. As you might expect, two of the main products were coffee and tobacco.
Afterwards, we'll stroll to the Clock Tower and the Plaza de los Coches (Carriage Square). Here, you'll learn about how commerce operated during the colonial era in the city.
The next stop will be Proclamation Square, a site of key political moments that marked a turning point in the country's history. Afterward, we'll explore Estanco del Tabaco Street to understand the historical significance of tobacco in the Caribbean. Did you know that during the colonial era there was an official tobacco monopoly administered by the Spanish Crown?
After discovering countless anecdotes about the relationship between Cartagena and tobacco, we'll stop at Santo Domingo Square, famous for its vibrant cultural life. This spot was also one of the most frequented by merchants, artisans, and travelers for centuries.
Finally, we will visit a place where we will learn and taste excellent coffee.
