I'm Alex, a 31 year old archaeologist and travel guide passionate about the flipside of history and the small curiosities and oddities that evade our everyday gaze! I have 5 years of experience as a tour guide in Portugal and Spain, and there's nothing I like more than exploring and researching local history and translating it to open-minded travellers that want to get under the skin of places.

About the tour

The westernmost capital of Europe is a city plagued by contrasts: once the richest city in the continent, it is now a chaotic, contradictory and mesmerizingly beautiful city rising out of the ashes of its own conflicted history.

Join me in a walking tour passing through the heart of the city, set against a dark past of medieval massacres, natural catastrophes, coups, dictatorships and revolutionaries and all the rich and wild events that have shaped Lisbon and made it a truly unique city.

We will explore famous sights along with some lesser-known areas and jewels hidden in the maze of streets surrounding the downtown, getting under the skin of the city and the underground currents that have shaped its form.

If you're looking for an initiation into the mysteries of Lisbon's character, an informal local perspective on the city's history and habits, then this is your tour!

Awesome tour. Alex is generous articulate and very skilled at communicating the unique currents of Portuguese social and political history in a super engaging way. He is astute at tailoring the focus of the tour to the guest's interests. We shared a couple of beers after the walk in a lovely Alfama plaza overlooking the city. Highly recommended.

I have no hesitation in recommending it. We had a great time with Alexandre, he's funny and made an excellent and exciting tour, not the usual boring walking around the city but a fascinating viewing and histories of Portugal.
