Discovering the Mysteries of Funchal
Hello Travellers! I'm Lisa, born and raised in Madeira and the founder of the Free Walking Tours in Funchal. I desired to be a guide since I was a teenager and finally achieved my goal in 2016, when I became a local mountain guide. In early 2018, some hikers, challenged me to guide Free Tours in Funchal. I was not familiar with the concept, but learned about it and completly fell in love with the Free Tours! I'm very happy to be able to share my home island with you, amazing travellers! In Summer 2022, Romeu joined this project and is know sharing his passion for Funchal with our spanish speaking visitors. Romeu is a teacher, a musician, a traveller and a very enthusiastic guide! Tour description
Funchal has over 500 years of history.
It was the first place where the Portuguese settled in the Age of Discovery.
Madeira was the testing ground for the mass production of sugar and it was the Madeirans who went around the world to start sugar production in various countries.
Initially a monster shrouded in mist in the eyes of 16th century navigators to a 21st century tourist paradise!
Madeira was the first place colonized by the Portuguese in the Age of Discovery.
It was a strategic point in the Atlantic for centuries and for a long time it was influenced by the most diverse cultures.
There was also a violent raid by privateers in 1566 that lasted 16 days!
Come and discover the evolution that the sugar trade, the Madeira wine trade and tourism have brought to Madeira!
During this tour, we will discover
The old town and the main monuments.
The history of the island of Madeira from its discovery to the attacks and looting!
Curiosities about the Madeirans and their land.
Places to visit and places to discover our gastronomy.
